Environmental Impact of Internet

Isaac, According to a fascinating article in the New Yorker by David Owen [1], environmental advocate Stan Cox has claimed that "by 2014, the U.S. computer network alone will each year require an amount of energy equivalent to the total electricity consumption of Australia". I feel that it is the responsibility of the free network movement, as pioneers in internet freedom and innovation, to also commit to being pioneers in environmental stewardship as it pertains to the creation of a "civilization of the mind in cyberspace". In order to make sure our new, cyberspace based civilization can thrive, we must ensure that civilization grounded to planet earth is sustainable, and be part of the solution, not the problem. --Jacobwhite 17:47, 25 December 2010 (CST)

Spamming Issue

Hey Isaac. I just joined yesterday! This wiki is a very exciting undertaking, but, as you have noticed, it is plagued by spammers which is not fun at all. Could you protect all the pages that have been attacked so far (or potentially all the pages on the wiki) so that only registered users can modify them? I think that once that is done, the wiki will be much more informative and much less frustrating for all of us. Thanks! --martin 10:33, 6 January 2011 (CST)

Did YOU write the description of me on my user page? :) By the way, you can find my public key on pgp.mit.edu. For some reason that was the only public key server website that accepted my public key with the command gpg --send-keys --keyserver keyserver key ID. Anyways, look my name on that server and send me an encrypted email. This is so exciting!!!

Is there some kind of chat feature available for MediaWiki? This would make this site much more exciting! By the way, send me the webserver info as you mentioned earlier; I would like to take a peek at it. Unfortunately, I will be skiing in Italy in the next 7 days so I will not be able to respond as often as I would like, but I will try to find a way to connect in the evenings at least. I would definitely like to get more involved. By the way, have you heard about the Freenet project? Check it out: Freenet Project. I think that this is perfect for mesh networks! Why did we never come across this (unless I missed something very important)?

I think we should have some way to chat in the meantime. Perhaps an IRC channel? I don't know what the specifics are for that.

I think we should look into getting an IRC channel in the meantime (and perhaps just in general). --Gordonbr 18:31, 7 January 2011 (CST)
