Environmental Impact of Internet
Isaac, According to a fascinating article in the New Yorker by David Owen [1], environmental advocate Stan Cox has claimed that "by 2014, the U.S. computer network alone will each year require an amount of energy equivalent to the total electricity consumption of Australia". I feel that it is the responsibility of the free network movement, as pioneers in internet freedom and innovation, to also commit to being pioneers in environmental stewardship as it pertains to the creation of a "civilization of the mind in cyberspace". In order to make sure our new, cyberspace based civilization can thrive, we must ensure that civilization grounded to planet earth is sustainable, and be part of the solution, not the problem.
