Zoom in of radio deployed at Joe's Data Center, July 2012

Address: 324 E 11th St # 100, Kansas City, MO (google maps)

Approx. Distance to Oak Tower: 0 km

This is the site where the access point antenna was installed, pointing east from the south-most window. Antenna was mounted at shoulder height on a tripod about half a meter back from the window. The window itself is sunk in a half meter alcove from the stone surface of the building. Window is fairly large, about a meter and a half wide. Radio had absolutely no direct line of sight to the south, though there might have been bounce around in the room and out the other windws. All the windows are glass with chicken wire with a hole diameter of a couple centimeters (unmeasured, looks standard).

We did connectivity tests indoors with the "far" radio lying on the ground at the base of the tower. Very likely there were significant reflections and scatter in this environment.

When going through "Distribution and Access", configuration was:

laptop [ethernet to] node1 nanostation [wifi ad-hoc to] tower1 nanostation [ethernet to] FNF_T01_3G01 radio [3.65GHz bridge to] FNF_L01_3G01 radio [ethernet via USB to] router

When going through "Distribution only", configuration was:

laptop [ethernet to] FNF_T01_3G01 radio [3.65GHz bridge to] FNF_L01_3G01 radio [ethernet via USB to] router

Access point (data center side) radio reported:

Approx. distance to Oak Tower: 5.6km

Top of a ridge, furthest location we tested connectivity at. Had lots of traffic posts and telephone wires in our line of sight, which was otherwise pretty good.

Data from July 6th, 2012 around 16:47 Central.

Filling Station

The filling station is a coffee shop. It happens to have a very clear line of sight to Oak Tower (south side), might be a good location to collaborate with.

Hardesty and 17th

Had line of sight around here? Don't have any notes.

Mutual Musicians Foundation

Unfortunately, tower was completely occluded by City Hall at this location. FNF hopes to collaborate with the Foundation to provide mesh-local live streaming music (multicast? broadcast?) in the future.

Paseo Baptist Church

Closest address was 2501 Paseo Blvd.

This was the first site we tried. The line of sight is only to the south side of Oak Tower, but we were able to get a reasonable connection!

Data from July 6th, 2012 around 15:54 Central.

Link-layer connection strength (on tower-side radio) reported as:

School

TODO: can't remember the name or address of this school.

Large school on a hill with great lines of sight to the neighboring community, just barely can see the western-most windows of the south side of Oak Tower. Actually uncertain if there is coverage at all because tree cover meant that line of sight photo was taken several meters to the side of the school building itself. The building is quite tall and should have a clear line of sight over the trees.

Truman and Cypress

Closest address 4501 Cypress Ave.

We did a quick survey and signal check here. Generally clear line of sight to the east side of Oak Tower, a few lamp posts and power lines around.

Park/Hill

Closest address was Saint Paul's church.

Excellent visibility of Oak Tower (east side) and the entire downtown sky line.

This is where we did testing the final day (July 8, 2012) around 10:30 Central.

IMPORTANT NOTE: we were hot and lazy and left the downlink radio lying in the grass on the side, so it's very possible that we should have been able to get better signal quality. Also unfortunately we were in a rush and didn't get a chance to log in to the radios to measure their reported signal strength and estimated throughput to compare with "actual" measurements.
